Karthika Pournami 2022 Date and Pooja Tithi Timings Festival

Karthika Pournami Date, Pooja Tithi Timings 2022:

  • Kartik Purnima happens this year on November 8, 2022. (Tuesday).
  • Kartik Purnima tithi starts at 4:16 pm on November 7 and ends at 4:32 pm on November 8.

Why Kartik Purnima Is Important:

The festival is celebrated as Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasara. It is also called “Tripuri Purnima” or “Tripurari Purnima.” The Lord Vishnu is also honoured during this festival. On this day, he became Matsya, which is his first incarnation, or “avatar.”

Hindu legend says that the Gods came down to earth on this day and landed in the sacred rivers. This is why, on Kartik Purnima, people who believe in Gods take baths in holy rivers, thinking that the Gods will bless them.

When this festival falls in the Nakshatra Krittika, it is more important (lunar mansion). It is called Maha Kartik when this happens.

Schedule of the event:

Kartik Purnima lasts for five days. The main celebration starts on Prabodhani Ekadashi. This is the time when the Gods who had come to earth woke up. This is also the end of Chaturmas, which is when Lord Vishnu slept for four months. On the 11th day of Shukla Paksha, Hindus celebrate Ekadashi, and on the 15th day, they celebrate Purnima.

Rituals during Kartik Purnima:

During this festival, there are a lot of rules that people follow. Here is a list of the ceremonies that will be held:

  • Hindu scriptures say that on this day, all devotees must take a bath in the Ganges or another holy river.
  • People also light diyas, which are made of earth, to celebrate Lord Vishnu’s victory. They think that when his time in exile was over, he went back to his home.
  • People carry idols and pictures of Lord Shiva as they walk in a procession. After worshipping them, they throw them into the water.
  • All of the gods are given a treat called “Annakutta” at temples.
  • Some worshippers also gather at sunrise or moonrise on the banks of holy rivers to pray to Lord Shiva.
  • Then, the devotees take part in the “Bhandara” and “Anna Daan” ceremonies. This is done so that the next year will be full of wealth and success.

Kartik Purnima among Hindus:

  • On Kartik Purnima, people in Odisha celebrate Boita Bandana by going to a body of water and setting small boats afloat. These are made of coconut sticks and banana stems, and betel leaves, fabric, and lamps are used to light them.
  • The festival is called Karthikai Deepam in Tamil Nadu, which is further south. Devotees celebrate the festival by lighting rows of lamps in their homes. Hindus hold a ten-day festival every year in Tiruvannamalai to honour Karthikai Deepam.
  • Karthika Maasalu is the name of the holy month in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Here, the celebration starts on Deepawali/Diwali and lasts until the end of the month. People light lamps every day during this time. Lastly, on Karthika Puranam, the day of the full moon, people make oil lamps at home with 365 wicks, which are then lit in Lord Shiva temples.
