The birth date of the second President of India, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, 5 September 1888, has been celebrated as Teacher's Day since 1962. On this day, teachers and students report to school as usual but the usual activities and classes are replaced by activities of celebration, thanks and remembrance.
Dr. Sarvepalli has contributed immensely to the field of education. He dedicated his life to the development of education, philosophy, and the country. That is why he has left an indelible mark on the minds of Indians. It was at his request his birthday was celebrated as Teachers' day across India since 1962. He said,
Special cultural programs are organized in every school as part of Teacher's Day celebrations. On this day, students give speeches, sing songs to their favourite teachers, and say good things about them. On the occasion of teachers, day students across India give gifts, and greeting cards to their teachers.
In schools, students dress up as their favourite teachers, give dance performances, and speeches, or arrange plays around relevant topics to celebrate this occasion. Sports competitions are conducted for teachers. Some children make a special celebration by giving gifts to their favourite Guru.
